Several such cities exist but Crawler town is the most popular due to the Aero 500 hydrogen fuel cell Air races that are held. Travelling the wastes in search of minerals and aquifers ( vital for survival) the mobility of the city keeps it away from the vicious sand storms of the wastes Details about the MOC – I really enjoyed building this one! Its started out as going to be a steam-punk land dreadnought/battleship but evolved into a roaming city where self sustainability and Eco efficiency became the theme. I ended up calling it "Eco-punk" due to its Steamy inspired roots. Several playable features include functional powered treads for movement , full suspension and front and rear steering. - John Thackara, who is director of Doors of Perception, gives a provocative talk about the role of design in finding solutions to the ecological crisis. After inviting us to avoid terms such as “future” or “sustainable” as they maintain a certain distance to the problem we face, he shows a rich set of projects he participated in. He makes the important point that the resources to be put in place already exist and that they might not necessitates complex technological developments. - Most weird sci-fi gadgets lose their sense of oddity with time. Heron’s aelopile has been on off-the-wall gizmo for 2,200 years. Technically, the aelopile is both a jet engine and a steam turbine, but it’s by no means a precursor of any real jet engine or any real steam turbine. The aeopile never seems to have been entirely forgotten or to have fallen out of "use" — perhaps because the aelopile never achieved any "use." It has no ancestors, no descendants and has never been substantially "improved." Since an aelopile could hit 500 rpm when properly greased, this was by far the most rapidly moving object known to the ancient world. You could instantiate an aelopile tomorrow, but what would you do with it? It’s is a living-fossil wonder-gadget. It’s be guessing that in another 2,200 years, the aelopile will seem about as curious and quirky as it does today.

- Venture into the world of science fiction as this film paints a portrait of the influential Russian filmmaker, Pavel Klushantsev who was deeply fascinated by this particular genre.
- Pavel Klushantsev’s classic science fiction film ‘The Road to the Stars’
- Scenes from Road to the Stars and 2001, side-by-side. Film-maker Alessandro Cima has posted some fascinating clips from Pavel Klushantsev’s classic 1957 Russian science-fiction film <em>The Road to the Stars</em>, over at Candlelight Stories. Forget Kubrick’s <em>2001</em> for as Cima explains, Klushantsev’s masterpiece was the first and arguably the better of the two films. Pavel Klushantsev’s 1957 film, <em>Road to the Stars</em>, features astoundingly realistic special effects that were an inspiration and obvious blueprint for Stanley Kubrick’s <em>2001: A Space Odyssey</em> ten years later. The film is an extended form of science education, building upon existing 1950s technology to predict space exploration of the future. The sequences with astronauts in zero gravity are incredibly realistic. The second excerpt from the film features the construction of and life aboard a space station in earth orbit that is not only convincing but also beautiful. There are several scenes with space station dwellers using videophones that anticipate the famous Kubrick videophone scene. Watching these short clips now, it is no surprise that <em>The Road to the Stars</em> has been described…

- Looker is the rare cheesy 1980s movie that got the future right
- By now, most of us are resigned to the notion that the Future™ is not going to be everything we were promised by science fiction. We will not be getting our flying cars, wise-cracking robot butlers, immortality pills, or pleasure model replicants any time soon. But while we mourn for everything that science fiction got wrong, let us stop for a moment to ponder the predictions that have come sadly, tragically, laughably true. Sort of. Enter Michael Crichton’s 1981 new media techno-thriller classic Looker.

- One Of The 32 Million With A RockYou Account? You May Want To Change All Your Passwords. Like Now.
- It’s no secret that most people use the same password over and over again for most of the services they sign up for. While it’s obviously convenient, this becomes a major problem if one of those services is compromised. And that looks to be the case with RockYou, the social network app maker. Over the weekend, the security firm Imperva issued a warning to RockYou that there was a serious SQL Injection flaw in their database. Such a flaw could grant hackers access to the the service’s entire list of user names and passwords in the database, they warned. Imperva said that after it notified RockYou about the flaw, it was apparently fixed over the weekend. But that’s not before at least one hacker gained access to what they claim is all of the 32 million accounts. 32,603,388 to be exact. The best part? The database included a full list of unprotected plain text passwords. And email addresses. Wow.

- “Dub Revolution ina China”: Jiang Liang Sound
- “Dub Revolution Ina China.” Jiang Liang Sound vs. Chinese propaganda footage and the “party is boundless.” Jiang Liang is upholding a long and honored tradition that goes all the way back to when Leslie Kong left China in the late 1950s and opened a record store in Kingston, Jamaica. In 1962 he produced Bob Marley’s first two singles. Randy Chin, Byron Lee, The Chung Brothers, Herman Chin-Loy were Jamaican-based Chinese ex-patriots who were all involved with the production of seminal reggae tracks in the 1960s and 70s. Roots music is indeed multi-cultural. Revolutions come out of the barrels of subwoofers. Thanks Mark Kamins.

At Global Kids we run the Virtual Video Project, which is all about youth creating machinima on an issue that they care about. So we think about how to use this digital filmmaking format for serious storytelling all the time. I…

- If you are sufficiently new media literate, you might recognize this panel as a mash-up, combining but not homogenizing five distinctive interpretations of “remixing.” Each contributor has a unique project example to share, but in the end there is some convergence: remixing enables participation, and thus encourages creativity, ownership, and collaboration – the three attributes of contemporary digital culture celebrated in this edition of the annual Media in Transition conference. One approach to learning through remixing is to provide tools that will expose the structure of media products, making it accessible to all. Modest digital editing, for example, allows a Star Trek fan to combine scattered “warp drive” commands into a countdown sequence: “Ahead warp 10! Go …

- Crawler town roams the barren wastes of a post steam-punk world after cataclysmic climate change do to excessive coal use. Several such cities exist but Crawler town is the most popular due to the Aero 500 hydrogen fuel cell Air races that are held. Many people travel the wastes to Crawler town for vacation and to enjoy rare luxuries like Pizza, fresh vegetables and Beer. Working crane, hanger slides for planes and lift from upper and lowers levels. Thanks for looking

- TED Theme The contemplation and, often, introduction of new technology is integral to TED: you might say it’s embedded in our genetic code. Computer scientist <a href=”/index.php/talks/view/id/65″>Jeff Han</a> intends to reinvent computing by replacing traditional point-click user interfaces with dynamic touch screens. <a href=”/index.php/talks/view/id/195″>Robert Full</a> wants to enhance transit and robotics by studying the motion of animals whose system of locomotion can adapt to nearly any surface. And <a href=”/index.php/talks/view/id/193″>Juan Enriquez</a> discusses oil energy — derived, ultimately, from ancient plants — and wonders why we can’t develop methods to “grow” energy as efficiently as we grow wheat. <a href=”/index.php/talks/view/id/129″>Blaise Aguera y Arcas</a> demonstrates his powerful new software, Photosynth, which fuses digital photographs from unrelated sources into fluid, three-dimensional tapestries of real environments. <a href=”/index.php/talks/view/id/142″>Alan Russell</a> wants to use bioengineered tissue to regenerate damaged body parts. And <a href=”/index.php/talks/view/id/72″>Chris Anderson</a> of <i>WIRED</i> discusses how emerging technologies — matched with the right business model — can make an impact of perhaps surprising magnitude.

- NMA – Learning Through Remixing | MIT World
- If you are sufficiently new media literate, you might recognize this panel as a mash-up, combining but not homogenizing five distinctive interpretations of “remixing.” Each contributor has a unique project example to share, but in the end there is some convergence: remixing enables participation, and thus encourages creativity, ownership, and collaboration – the three attributes of contemporary digital culture celebrated in this edition of the annual Media in Transition conference. One approach to learning through remixing is to provide tools that will expose the structure of media products, making it accessible to all. Modest digital editing, for example, allows a Star Trek fan to combine scattered “warp drive” commands into a countdown sequence: “Ahead warp 10! Go …

Go …

- Film Music and Digital Media | MIT World
- In a panel that at times resembles a late-night ramble and conversation, three film music professionals discuss changes in their industry, with some no-holds-barred dishing and kvetching. Martin Marks sets the scene historically, starting with the revolutionary introduction of sound to film. He plays a clip from the original 1933 film King Kong, which he describes as both a technological and aesthetic landmark of soundtrack production. Paul Chihara continues the story, explaining that the score’s creator, Max Steiner, was part of the first wave of film composers, classically trained musicians, fleeing Hitler’s Germany. Steiner drew on the music he knew best, the kind performed by the Vienna Staatsoper, for his King Kong score, so we get a movie that’s “wall to wall music,…

- Television’s Great Writer | MIT World
- This talk, by one of television’s most dark-minded auteurs, may inspire some viewers to upgrade their cable service to HBO, or at least to rent DVDs of his classic police dramas. David Milch, in the flesh, proves as provocative as some of his finest creations. In the course of a conversation with David Thorburn, (a former Yale colleague), Milch touches on previous works, like NYPD Blue and Hill Street Blues, delves into Deadwood, his new, alternative Western series, and reveals astonishing pieces of his own biography. Prodded to reflect on some of his twisted but charismatic TV characters, Milch says, “My old man used to beat me pretty good. And I adored him. He wound up taking his own life.” That’s for starters. Milch goes on to describe his surgeon father’s ganglan…
- The Soundscape of Modernity: Architectural Acoustics and the Culture of Listening in America, 1900-1933 | MIT World
- In this history of aural culture in early-twentieth-century America, Emily Thompson charts dramatic transformations in what people heard and how they listened. What they heard was a new kind of sound that was the product of modern technology, and the way they listened was as newly critical consumers of aural commodities. By examining the technologies that produced this sound, as well as the culture that enthusiastically consumed it, Thompson recovers a lost dimension of the Machine Age and deepens our understanding of the experience of change that characterized the era. The Soundscape of Modernity is published by The MIT Press, 2002, and is available from the Press at http://mitpress.mit.edu/0262201380. Selected Bibliography of Works in Aural HistoryAttali, Jaques.

Wow.

- Dangerous Minds | Haunted Retro part 1: Ariel Pink, John Maus & Gary War
- What is “Haunted Retro”? It is hypnagogic music. It is the sound of the future as heard in the past. It is children hiding under bedsheets with AM radios, dialling through the airwaves til they find the sacred music that will sweep them far away. It is the music of your dreams, even your nightmares. just before the alarm wakes you up and your memory is wiped. Ok, so “haunted retro” doesn’t exist. I made it up for the purposes of this article, and as an excuse to write about Ariel Pink and his pals. But hey, as a term it works! Because, while these acts I am going to write about share certain lo-fi techniques and nostalgic sensibilities, they are much more than simple pastiche merchants trying to relive an imagined past. Akin to bands like Portishead sampling 60s spy soundtracks and putting them in a different context, haunted retro artists cannot help taking their influences and molding them into something new. Something that feels warm and cozy like we’ve heard it before, but with a deep and disturbing uncertainty at its core. It’s beautiful, it is uncanny, but it’s not quite right. ARIEL PINK Unquestionably Ariel Pink is the leader of this whole “movement”. An outsider from the outset, Mr Pink is finally coming to gain the respect…
